Frankton Road Watermain Upgrade

Frankton Road is home to a key section of the main trunk water supply line, which delivers large volumes of water to the wider Queenstown and Frankton areas. This pipeline is a critical component of our water network—but a portion of it had become increasingly unreliable, experiencing multiple breaks and continuing to deteriorate over time.

To protect the integrity of the network and reduce the risk of future failures, we undertook a major upgrade on a 349-metre section of the pipeline on Frankton Road.

The upgrade involved installing a new, stronger pipe that will significantly reduce the risk of bursts, extended water outages, and flooding to nearby properties. Key features of the upgrade included:

  • 349m of DN355 PE100 PN12.5 pipe

  • 275m of DN63 PE pipe

  • 22 new property connections

  • Installation of 3 hydrants

  • 3 cut-ins to existing 250mm asbestos main

  • Chlorination and pressure testing of the new section

  • Grout filled abandonment of the old 250mm asbestos main

  • 728sqm of lane reinstatement, including surface prep and asphalt

  • Tree removal as necessary to enable access

Additionally, we installed isolation valves, which means fewer properties will be affected during any future maintenance or emergency shutdowns.

This upgrade is a major step in future-proofing Queenstown’s water supply network. By investing in modern, resilient infrastructure today, we’re reducing the likelihood of disruptive outages tomorrow—keeping homes and businesses supplied, and ensuring we can respond quickly to any issues that do arise.

We thank local residents and road users for their patience during construction and are proud to have completed this essential project on time and on budget.
